Finding your perfect match: why job interviews are like speed dating

So once you’ve set the date for your all-important job interview, how do you make the perfect first impression?

It’s time to ‘speed date’ your prospective employers. Here are my top tips to make sure you are fully prepared, ready to engage your new employer and get that new contract signed, sealed, delivered.”

Put your best foot forward
When speed dating, eager singletons generally have 4 minutes to sell themselves to prospective dates. Look at a job interview the same way. First impressions count.

In order to ‘get lucky’ when interviewing, you should exude confidence and put your best foot forward.  Use the first few minutes to really sell yourself, your skills, strengths, and the value you can bring to a company.

Don’t forget that first impressions count, so pay attention to body language. Little things like sitting up straight, making eye contact, having a good firm handshake, and smiling all help convey a positive first impression.

Is there long-term potential?

Knowing what’s important to you will quickly help you identify if a potential job and employer is right for you. Be selfish. Know your boundaries, non-negotiables and how to identify potential red flags. After all, nobody wants to be stuck in a toxic relationship.

Re-read the job description and any information they’ve sent you pre-interview to ensure you know what they are looking for, and how your skills match their requirements. Research the company to find out as much as you can about them – and use LinkedIn to find out more about potential teammates or bosses, should you take the job.

Ask yourself what do you want from an employer and what information do you need to have in order to decide if a company or role is right for you?

But be aware. Just like dating profiles, online job ads and company websites can only tell you so much – and it will always be the image a company wants to portray. To avoid getting catfished when speed dating, make sure you prepare questions to help you dive below the surface and get deeper insight into the role.

Just like with speed dating, when you ask questions it demonstrates a genuine interest, allowing both parties to find out more and tick the boxes that are important to them.

Dress to impress 

As we said previously, first impressions count, so dress to impress. It’s always better to over-dress in an interview. Smart, business attire is the way to go.

Pick an outfit that makes you feel confident and reflects your personality. Make sure that whatever you choose to wear is comfortable in both a seated or standing position – constantly fiddling with your outfit and readjusting will not make a good impression.

Watch your language

Using slang, swearing, or making inappropriate jokes can be viewed as unattractive and unprofessional. Make a conscious effort to watch your language in order to maintain a professional manner, reserving more casual conversation for your friends.

Avoid oversharing, especially when it comes to negative experiences. There’s no need to dish the dirt about exes. Always keep discussion around previous employers respectful, highlighting any steps you took to try and overcome difficulties, even if the outcome was a break up.

Swipe right for more potential matches  

Finding the perfect job is hard. Broaden your search and keep your options open by ensuring you’re on all the apps and signed up with the correct agencies. Fill out your profile in full and check the apps daily to ensure you don’t miss that hot new listing that could just be your match made in heaven.

Trust your gut. You know deep down when something does or doesn’t feel right. And the excitement you feel when you meet a good match is like no other. So trust those butterflies, pay attention to any red flags, and remember – if you’re unsuccessful this time, there are plenty more fish in the sea!
